The History
The toponym was first recorded in a bill of sale dated 23rd January 1029, stipulated between deacon Gerardo and Ugo the Marquis of Este. In the 13th century, Stradella was under the curia of Montalino and belonged to the Cathedral of Pavia. It had its own statutes, defined by Bishop Pietro Grassi on 19th November 1419, “as the Count of Stradella and the entire curia of Montalino and the Bishop of Pavia, its secular and spiritual lord”. The diocesan lordship was particularly beneficial for the prosperity of Stradella, which was allowed to host a Tuesday weekly market in 1220. The dominion of the Bishop, Count of Stradella, ended in 1797, with the abolition of feudalism.
