The History
The toponym was first recorded in a document dating from 859. In the high middle ages it was part of the committee of Auce, in the area of Piacenza (Guasco). In 1047, a general trial took place in Broni, chaired by the imperial envoy Rainaldo. In 1077, emperor Henry IV confirmed the lordship of the sons of Azzo II of the House of Este. With the Diploma issued on 8th August 1164, Frederick I transferred the dominion over Broni to the city of Pavia and in 1290 Broni was enfeoffed to the Beccaria family who remained loyal to Pavia until 1357. On the 24th of September 1415, Domenico Aicardi was enfeoffed with it and Broni remained in their possession until 1475. Doge Francis Sforza promoted Broni into a County in 1454. It is believed that a Roman settlement existed on the current location of Broni, mentioned in two itineraries as Comillomagus, or Cameliomagus. These were most likely erroneous transcriptions of the presumedl original settlement called Camillomagus. Although, in some other texts, the same name stands for Redavalle, the site of numerous finds from the Roman period, the distances specified on the said itineraries point to Broni. Places of interest • Collegiate Church of San Pietro • Library • Cigognola with its 13th century Castle • Association of Producers of Wine with a Registered Designation of Origin (D.O.P.) of the Oltrepò Pavese • Association of Producers of Classese – The Wine Growers’ Itermunicipal Cooperative of Broni
