Pancarana derives from Pancharius. It was under the dominion of the diocese of Pavia between the 10thand the 18th century, first as a signoria and later as a feudal estate. Apparently, there were about 500 inhabitants in Pancarana in the 15th century. The Pancarana-Sommo ferry connection was on the Voghera-Pavia main road.
