The History
The remains of the castle and the enclosing walls of the upper part of Fortunago village testify of its ancient origin. Its name, with its suffix "aco" denoting a “house near the water”, hints at a Celtic rule, whereas the existing water spring strengthens this hypothesis. Fortunacum is the Latin version that first appeared in a document dating from the 10th century, specifying that the village belonged to the committee of Tortona. It came under the dominion of the Malaspina family in 1164, later on of the Dal Verme family and subsequently of Gerolamo Riario, in the late 14th century. In 1546, however, the Malaspinas managed to take possession of the area once again and maintained it until the second half of the 18th century.
