Archaeological finds provide evidence of the first settlements in the early Bronze Age, concurrent to the pre-Celtic civilisation of Golasecca. The toponym could be of Etruscan origin considering its suffix “ona”, or its prefix “grava" (gravel) referring to the pebbly alluvial soil. There are also traces of settlements going back to the 7th century, the Iron Age, i.e. from Celtic times.
