The History
Its history is linked to the old Benedictine abbey of St. Christine, Abbazia benedettina di Santa Cristina, founded by Liuthprand, the King of the Lombards, under the name of St. Anastasius (Sant'Anastasio in Italian) in the first half of the 8th century. The monastery was dedicated to St. Christine in the 9th century. The Archbishop of Milan obtained the jurisdiction over the monastery from Pope Urban in the 11th century. Conradin (Corradino) Duke of Swabia was given hospitality there in 1267. In 1513 the Vallumbrosan monks replaced the Benedictine order in the monastery until its closure in 1654.
