The History
Is not certain whether Torricella corresponds to a place Isella (= islet, in Latin), known since the Middle Ages (the name would be interpreted as Turris Isella), hypothesis not inconsiderable also because of the shape of the hill on which stands the country, which seems exactly a small island in the middle of a valley. Certainly the name appears to be Turricella in the thirteenth century.
In the hamlet Verzate stood a house of the Templars (Santa Maria del Verzario), who with the other assets of the Temple, after the suppression of the Order, was assigned to the Hospitallers of St. John, where he remained until the Napoleonic era. There are those who assume that the Templars themselves have played a role in the development of Torricella.
