The History
Mede used to be an important economic centre in Roman times, of which archaeological finds exhibited at the Museum of Novara provide evidence. In 1157, Frederick I assigned the dominion of Mede to the Counts Palatine of Lomello who also had the supremacy over the Lomellina in 1164. Of the many family lines the Counts Palatine divided into, one of the most important was that of the Counts of Mede which also branched out thereupon, but wisely, as mutual solidarity was cultivated through agreements allowing the sale of the estate exclusively to family members and relatives. In this manner they continued to obtain confirmations from the Emperors and the Dukes of Milan (who ruled Mede until 1535), from the Spanish (1535-1706) and from the House of Savoy (Mede was conquered in 1706 by Eugene of Savoy on behalf of the Austrians who passed it to the Savoy family in 1707, together with the rest of the Lomellina). Places of interest • Church of SAN MARZIANO • Church of the CONFRATERNITÀ DELLA SANTISSIMA TRINITÀ • SANGIULIANI Castle • Regina – A Museum for an Avant-garde Sculptor / REGINA - UN MUSEO PER UNA SCULTRICE D’AVANGUARDIA • Naturalistic Collection “Ugo Fantelli” • MASINARI’s Old Rice Mill • Castle, 14th century, situated in the vicinity of the hamlet of TORTOROLO
